Signals of 2024 #case
// Cultural Signals 2024: Three Cultural Indicators Reshaping the Present
06-03-2025, the Lab Team.
For the fourth year, the selection exercise of the most relevant cultural signals of last year has been conducted. The year 2024 has been marked by political shifts, technological recalibrations, and discussions regarding digital engagement, and these elements frame ongoing debates about governance, algorithmic influence, and personal agency in technology use.
The review of signals has become an annual endeavour, offering insights into the evolving dynamics of culture, technology, and society. In our early years, we focused on the nature of “cool signals”, but the world has changed. In 2024, the selection process has once again highlighted shifts that redefine the intersections of digital engagement, political movements, and technological structures. These signals serve as markers of transformation, illustrating the ongoing negotiations between governance, media systems, and individual agency in a hyper-connected world.
The selection process employed a Delphi-inspired methodology and a focus group, ensuring a collective evaluation of emerging trend signals by our team of researchers. The following three signals, selected by the members of the Trends and Culture Management Lab, represent th developments that require further examination in the broader discourse on socio-cultural transformations.
.
1. The return of Trump to the US presidency

The re-election of Donald Trump represents a pivotal shift in the socio-political landscape, activating discourses on the resilience of democratic institutions, the evolution of populist narratives, and the strategic deployment of media ecosystems. This event catalyses transformations in political engagement, with direct implications for information flows, algorithmic governance, and networked influence. The broader trajectory of this development invites further interrogation into its structural ramifications, particularly concerning policy discourse, electoral dynamics, and the reconfiguration of global political imaginaries.
2. Instagram’s algorithm reset functionality

Instagram’s introduction of an algorithm reset function signals a broader cultural shift in the discourse on digital autonomy and platform agency. This development responds to rising anxieties over algorithmic determinism, content homogenisation, and the role of recommendation systems in shaping digital subjectivities. By enabling users to recalibrate their content feeds, the platform engages with emergent demands for greater transparency and control within digital ecosystems. However, the structural implications of this intervention remain uncertain, as it raises critical questions regarding the limits of user empowerment, the adaptability of algorithmic architectures, and the negotiation of digital influence within platform economies.

3. The movement towards reduced smartphone reliance

The discourse surrounding smartphone disengagement has emerged as a significant cultural signal, reflecting broader negotiations around digital dependency, media consumption patterns, and socio-technological autonomy. The publication in question foregrounds the complexities of withdrawal from embedded digital infrastructures, highlighting the socio-economic and behavioural frameworks that perpetuate hyper-connectivity. This phenomenon signals a moment of recalibration in digital engagement, questioning the boundaries of technological necessity and the viability of alternative communicative ecologies.
.
The research team at the Laboratory of Trend and Culture Management is preparing a scientific article analysing all the signals considered in the 2024 selection process. In tracing these cultural shifts, we engage with the currents of transformation shaping contemporary experience. The findings, soon to be published, will serve as an open invitation to reflect on the impermanence of trends, the structures that sustain them, and the possibilities they herald for the future.
